Plein air female nude charcoal and white chalk on toned paper

A little bit lighter grey paper here, Canford, I think its made by Daler Rowney, its smooth and has no texture at all, as I prefer it for drawings in general.

"Jessica" standing female nude 6x8 white chalk charcoal drawing

Value/contrast study with charcoal and white charcoal, I used a neutral dark grey paper that was appropriate for the lighting conditions, the whitest white was actually applied with a regular white chalk, more dark tones were added with a black panpastel.

Seated and covering female nude sketches from life

Meditative pose, the frontal plane was accentuated while leaving the rest of the body and the head on the secondary plane, there's more illusion of space created this way.

"Dancer" female nude figure charcoal with white chalk drawing

The block-in was done with vine charcoal just to map out the general shapes, then some more darks were added with panpastel, for soft edges I use the blender tool or a paper towel for lost edges, these are helpful since they make the drawing more dynamic and interesting then just plain rendering.

"Timeless" female nude figure study charcoal with brush drawing

The brushwork is more apparent here then on the previous one, the drawing itself dictates the needed approach and treatment in the particular circumstances, the concept is pre-visualized yet the rendering happens spontaneously, big brushstrokes were applied to strengthen the dark background, final touches of compressed charcoal pencil were added to further tweak the shapes, the pose is sculptural-like, yet the looseness suggests movement.

The seven day auction starts tonight at 18:50pm Pacific time, it will be open for biding during this time period.

Portrait of a young Asian girl original charcoal drawing

The subtle value changes were handled with a charcoal wash on this one (charcoal powder and water applied with a brush), the drawing was accentuated with vine or compressed charcoal pencils, this way the shapes were more affirmative and final, the wash is a nice way to establish the middle values and serves as a build up.

Asian female nude figure drawing on paper

More linear approach here and some shading where needed, I also used the large side of the conte to mass out certain parts, careful placement is a must though, even for the larger shapes.

"Undertow" female nude reclining figure charcoal drawing on paper

“According to [Jung's] way of thinking, all the organs of our bodies—not only those of sex and aggression—have their purposes and motives, some being subject to conscious control, others, however, not. Our outward-oriented consciousness, addressed to the demands of the day, may lose touch with these inward forces; and the myths, states Jung, when correctly read, are the means to bring us back in touch. They are telling us in picture language of powers of the psyche to be recognized and integrated in our lives, powers that have been common to the human spirit forever, and which represent that wisdom of the species by which man has weathered the millenniums. Thus they have not been, and can never be, displaced by the findings of science, which relate rather to the outside world than to the depths that we enter in sleep. Through a dialogue conducted with these inward forces through our dreams and through a study of myths, we can learn to know and come to terms with the greater horizon of our own deeper and wiser, inward self. And analogously, the society that cherishes and keeps its myths alive will be nourished from the soundest, richest strata of the human spirit.” Joseph Campbell, Myths to Live By
