I used charcoal mostly in this drawing and all the highlights were done with hard pastel since they allow more precision then the soft pastels, I used the toned paper as a middle tone.

The first time I saw a technique like this used in a drawing was one of Da Vinci's renderings, a combination of firm charcoal drawing and pastel highlights, this way you dont loose the strenght of the drawing and get some volume from the pastel too, I still think I do it in a different way since I like to experiment a lot with these simple mediums and see what works or not for me.
