This one's a bit larger then usual therefore I had to take a shot with my camera since it won't fit in the scanner, I started this as a quick sketch from life and then developed it further based on the quick light/dark keystrokes that I laid down initially, the drawing has more color then seen here in this image.

You have models that can't hold a pose for 5 minutes and you have models that can easily stay in the same pose for a longer period of time without any movement, like in this case, she was able to zone in, or drift out and go into a meditative state that made easier for me to translate that feeling on this piece of paper.

I used a reference for this one as I started the drawing but as it progressed further I used a combination of reason and imagination, sometimes you can't anticipate the results so the drawing kinda finished itself into more religious/spiritual gaze that I could't quite predict or plan in the beginning, sometimes you let go and things take its own course.

A subtler rendering was needed here for the flesh tones, the warm window light slowly travels across the surface of the body to create cool shadows, both opposites working and complementing each other constantly, like ying and yang.

More textured paper was used here, it gives a richer effect in the background, its ideal when you want more variety in the surfaces, its good to have an idea before starting a drawing and where you wanna take it, that way the choice of paper will be more appropriate.

I was going for an intimist feeling in an outdoor setting here, the figure is caught in a moment of surprise, its unexpected for her and since she's looking towards the viewer it brings more suspense to the subject matter.

Here's a new drawing from last night, it was done mostly in vine charcoal, the whiteness of the paper was evened with a paper towel, as it progressed further more definite darks were added with a 6B charcoal pencil, it was varnished with Utrecht clear coat spray.

I used a different paper here and quite liked it, the surface is smooth and very responsive to the charcoal and kneaded eraser, its made by Canford, I like this dark grey tone but you can get in different colors.

In this drawing I used more soft pastels in the light areas, that added more pigment and rendered the mass better, for the darks I used suggestive strokes and softened certain edges with the pan pastel tool.

I experimented a bit here with the charcoal as a medium and used a brush instead, its not the first time that I've done this, now I added water and mixed it with a charcoal powder, its a compromise between drawing and painting, you're doing both at the same without giving up on either of them.If you're trying something like I highly advise you to use watercolor paper so it can absorb all the watery brushwork and extra pressure.
Here's what I used:
Vine charcoal
General's Powdered charcoal
Flat brush (random one)
kneaded eraser
Water
..and a little white chalk for highlights.

Here's a quick sketch from the last Live Draw event that happened Saturday night, I think the pose was a 7 or 10 minute one, the model was trying out some unconventional poses leveraging her body weight off a curtain that was hanging from the ceiling, not an easy thing to do especially when trying to be fixed in a certain pose, even for 10 minutes.

When I go through a wide range of tonalities like in this case, all the way from whitest whites to darkest darks, I choose a neutral paper tone, this way I have a middle value to begin with, then I establish the 'lowest' and the 'highest' key in the scale and start building from there, the interdependence of the values is one the most important things in a drawing or painting.

I recorded a video today of the process that to took to make this drawing, it's one of the ways I approach drawing a head and it should give you more insight of my methods, I think it went around 1hr and 15 minutes to make this sketch but I had to drastically reduce or better put 'speed up' the video so it actually fits the standards of online viewing.

Started the outlines with some vine charcoal and as the drawing progressed further more permanent charcoal pencils were used, I often use the paper blending tortillions for fine tweeking the shapes, its great for edges too.

I just noticed today that I'm missing some dark pastel tones from my pastel sets, there's so many of these sticks that its real easy to loose track of them once they get used up, luckily I live one block from the art store and I was able to get a few Nu Pastels by piece, haven't really used them before but they go quite well with what I already have, you can mix&match pastels from many different manufacturers without a problem.

There's no particular order in which I use pastels, I find it a very impulsive medium and its great for sketching or applying color to a drawing without mixing paints on the palette, most of the time I pick the 'right' pastel stick just by glancing over the pastel box and tracking the appropriate color tone for the spots that needs it.

Ok, so this is a very small drawing, when I work on such a small scale I always try to 'calculate' the composition before I start avoiding unnecessary adjustments later on, I used Pan pastels in a very painterly manner and their sponge like tools to apply the pigment directly, just like oil painting minus the oil, the more delicate parts were drawn with regular pastel sticks.

I had to spray this drawing because the vine charcoal was floating all over the surface of the paper and after awhile it won't take any more of it, on the other side I needed it to be fluid and purely abstract around the face so I can create that hallucinatory/dreamlike state from the chaos of the messy 'primitive' charcoal and reinforce the design of the facial features with a charcoal pencil.

It seems like I'm in a mode of rendering ethnic portraits lately, it's just that different facial structures are always so interesting to explore and every race has its own unique 'facial recognition system", sometimes this racial differences can be very distinctive and often there's just a slight facial variation.
It took me around 1hour of compressed time to create this drawing, it will be available on a longer 10 day auction.

To fixate a pastel drawing or not, that is the question.I often just lightly spray the surface for protection but I'm now reconsidering that, there are many different kinds of fixatives on the market and even if you buy the 'best' one they always darken the values and many subtle color changes are lost, so maybe the best thing to do is to leave it alone after its finished and just mat it and frame it under glass.
Since this drawing had a latin vibe I was listening to some Cuban music just so I can be more in tune with what I'm drawing, usually I cut off any kind of outside influence while I'm working but sometimes it can be very helpful especially when it serves the purpose, just like in this case.

Here I used paper made by Utrecht, it's a bit rougher then Canson since it has more tooth on the surface, I constantly try out different paper types, but still Canson works best for me.

I was trying to get the emotion after the protagonist in this piece receives and reads a letter and his expression after knowing its contents.
The tools used in this one are pretty much the same as the last drawing I did.
